75% of Ads in the WAHM Community are Not Worth It

January 13, 2007 · Filed Under This & That

Talk about a headline huh? The sad fact about it is 100% true! I was checking out the blog over at Advertisingmoms.com and I came across an old post from November 20, 2006. I don’t know why i didn’t notice it before..perhaps it was that I was still recovering from the last WAH Expo! :)

In the post, Kelly talks about how 75% of the ads being offered in the WAHM Community are not worth the money being paid for them. The sad fact is that the wahm’s who are paying for these advertising spots are using their hard-earned money and just throwing it away. I know what you are thinking.. why would someone do that?

Well the answer is simple! When most people look at advertising spots (especially in the WAHM community) they don’t really look to see if it truly meets their target market. Many times they see “$10 for a button for 3 months” and they say “oh wow, thats a great deal and its in my budget”!

Well that is true..it is in their budget but probably not necessarily in their target market. The other thing is that what is different about your $10 ad spot than any other $10 ad spot that is put on that site, probably not much. I have to say I’ve been guilty of that myself but I learned from that mistake.

That’s why these days you really need to think out of the box when it comes to advertising your online business… look at paying a little more for premium advertising spots, really look at if this advertising opportunity meets your specific target market, perhaps sponsorship of a podcast/internet radio show, or maybe dwelve into offline marketing in your local area.

So what do you think? Feel free to post your comments

    Tammy, more should definitely take the plunge into advertising on internet radio shows and podcasts. The advertising is usually quite affordable and it’s multi dimensional. When you advertise on a website you only get the graphic or text, with a podcast you get to TELL your message again and again - usually for months as programs stay in the archives.

    Thanks for your post!

    [...] Tammy Munson commented on one of our blog posts from last year.  We agree that there are a lot of advertising opportunities in the WAHM community that aren’t worth the cost.  Tammy organizes a semi annual Work at Home Expo that WAHMs should be sure to participate in. [...]

    Hi Tammy;

    I agree completely with what you are saying here. It seems like sometimes wahms write their ads for other wahms, when this may not even be the people that want to buy their product or service. Then they place that ad, or button etc on a site that services wahms, but again, that isn’t their market. One of my niches is cwahms in their first 2 years of business, yet another niche is for professional Christian coaches…I wouldn’t place those ads in the same places, nor would I ‘language’ the ads the same either.

    Great points Tammy!

    Tammy- a couple of years ago I was guilty of building a wahm resource/advertising site, thinking that I could offer low cost ads for the work at home budget, but I quickly learned how much time and committment was needed for that.

    I made a decision to discontinue offering advertising on that site and focus on my own personal business that had suffered during the time I persued that venture.

    I am now very frugal when it comes to advertising my business and will use alternate methods of promoting which has proven to be more effective than slapping an ad on a website.

    I still like to share wahm resources and continue to do that on my blog I don’t need a website for that;)

    I’ll stick to what I do best and stop trying to be SUPERWAHM that can do everything herself. We need each other, why not support each other and get the job done right?

    Tammy, I couldn’t agree more! When I think of all the money I’ve spent advertising here and there with zero results ~ simply because at the time, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing ~ I get chills and not so good flashbacks, LOL! But, learning is the key! I’ve learned so I don’t do that anymore. I encourage WAHMs to realize one statement that is so true… “you get what you pay for!”
